NewsMVNU's Barchus Named National Pitcher of the Week

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio - Jon Barchus, a member of the Mount Vernon Nazarene University baseball team, has been selected as the NAIA National Pitcher of the Week for his performances on the mound during the week of April 7-13. Barchus was also selected as the American Mideast Conference and NAIA Region IX Pitcher of the Week - marking the second time he was chosen for those honors.
Barchus, a junior right-hander from Crestline, Ohio, began the week by tossing a one-hit shutout (his second of the season) at Walsh University in a 1-0 victory as he allowed just three walks with six strikeouts over seven innings.
Then, the former Mansfield Christian High School standout closed out the week by picking up a win in relief in a 5-4 victory over Saint Vincent (Pa.) College as he allowed just one hit and one walk over 1 1/3 innings with two strikeouts.
For the season, Barchus is 7-0 with a 2.41 earned run average. In 37 13 innings, he has struck out a team-high 49 batters and issued just 13 walks. Opposing batters are hitting just .213 against him. He also leads the team with two shutouts.
MVNU will return to action on Thursday when the Cougars travel to Tiffin University for a non-conference doubleheader that will get under way at 1:00 p.m.
