
For the third time already this season, LeAnn Mallernee, a member of the Mount Vernon Nazarene College women's basketball team, has been selected as the National Christian College Athletic Association Player of the Week. She was honored for her efforts during the week of December 25-31.
Mallernee, a 6-foot-2 senior center from Sugarcreek, Ohio, led the Lady Cougars to a 2-0 record for the week as the former standout at Garaway High School averaged 14.5 points and 13.0 rebounds while shooting 44.8 percent from the field (13-of-29).
Mallernee began the week with 14 points and 12 rebounds in an 87-53 victory at the University of Texas-Dallas. She also added two assists and three steals. Mallernee closed out the week with another double-double as she recorded 15 points and a career-high 14 rebounds in an 87-67 win at LeTourneau (Texas) University. She was 7-of-11 from the field in that contest.
For the season, Mallernee ranks among the AMC leaders in scoring (15.2 points per game), rebounding (8.6 boards per game), field goal percentage (53.3 percent), and blocked shots (18). She is also third on the team with 20 steals.
The Lady Cougars are currently off to a 10-2 start to the season, and the team has a 2-1 American Mideast Conference mark. MVNC is also ranked #20 in the latest NAIA Division II poll. The team will return to action on Thursday when the Lady Cougars will travel to Cedarville University for a conference game that is slated to tip off at 7:00 p.m.
