Three members of the Mount Vernon Nazarene College women's basketball team were honored on Tuesday when the National Christian College Athletic Association East Region awards were announced.
LeAnn Mallernee, a 6-foot-2 senior forward from Sugarcreek, Ohio, was named to the NCCAA East Region First Team. The former standout at Garaway High School leads the Lady Cougars in rebounding (8.6 boards per game) and is scoring at a 14.4 points per game clip. Mallernee has also broken the school's single-season blocked shots record with 44 rejections. In addition, she has recorded 34 assists and 35 steals.
Angie Trainer, a 5-foot-10 junior guard from Washington Court House, Ohio, joined Mallernee on the NCCAA East Region First Team. The former Miami Trace High School star leads MVNC in scoring (15.7 points per game), assists (95), and steals (77). Trainer is also averaging 5.4 rebounds per contest. Earlier this season, she became the 12th player in Lady Cougar history to reach the 1,000-point mark for her career.
Deanna Kilpatrick, a 6-foot-1 senior forward from Warsaw, Ohio, was named to the NCCAA East Region Second Team. The former River View High School product is averaging 10.1 points and 6.6 rebounds per game. Kilpatrick has also recorded 26 blocked shots, 31 steals, and 61 assists. Earlier this year, she joined Trainer as the 13th player in school history to score 1,000 career points. She is also the program's career leader in three-pointers made with 179.
MVNC finished the regular season with a 17-11 overall record. The Lady Cougars are waiting to see who their opponent will be in the NCCAA East Region Tournament next week.
