
Kenny Chaffin, a member of the Mount Vernon Nazarene College men's basketball team, has been selected as the National Christian College Athletic Association Men's Basketball Player of the Week for his efforts during the week of November 27-December 3.
Chaffin, a 6-foot-6 junior forward from Marysville, Ohio, led the Cougars to a 2-1 week that included winning the Food for the Hungry Holiday Invitational. For the week, the former All-Ohioan at Marysville High School averaged 24.7 points and 7.0 rebounds per game while shooting 61.5 percent (32-of-52) from the field.
Chaffin began the week with 10 points, seven rebounds, and two blocked shots as MVNC dropped an 86-67 American Mideast Conference decision at the University of Rio Grande. In the first round of the Food for the Hungry Holiday Invitational, Chaffin led all scorers with 30 points on 12-of-18 shooting from the field that included a 3-of-4 performance from beyond the three-point arc as the Cougars rallied to beat Ohio Valley (W.V.) College 75-68. Then, in the championship game, he scored a career-high 34 points on 15-of-21 shooting as MVNC defeated Brock (Ontario) University 87-72 and he was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player. He also grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds.
For the season, Chaffin leads the Cougars in scoring with a 21.6 points per game average. He is shooting 56.2 percent from the field (77-of-137), 40 percent from the three-point arc (12-of-30), and 77.8 percent from the free throw line (28-of-36). He is also averaging 6.8 rebounds per game and has blocked a team-high eight shots.
MVNC is currently 6-3 overall on the season. The Cougars are also 0-1 in the AMC. The team will return to action on Saturday when MVNC will travel to Wilberforce University for another conference contest that will tip off at 7:00 p.m.
