"Lady Cougars Sweep Weekly Softball Honors"

   Amanda Schumm and Tara Hines, two members of the Mount Vernon Nazarene College women's fastpitch softball team, were named the American Mideast Conference and NAIA Region IX Player and Pitcher of the Week respectively for their efforts during the week of April 2-8.

   Schumm, a junior third baseman from Rockford, Ohio, batted .643 for the week as the Lady Cougars went 4-0. The former All-Ohioan at Parkway High School was 9-for-14 with one double, one triple, six runs batted in, and three runs scored. She also posted a .857 slugging percentage and a .667 on-base percentage as MVNC swept doubleheaders from Kenyon College and Notre Dame College.

   For the season, Schumm leads the team with a .500 batting average, 28 hits, 17 RBI, and 16 runs scored. She also has a .661 slugging percentage and a .556 on-base percentage.

   Hines, a senior right-handed pitcher from Marion, Ohio, posted a 2-0 record with one save in three appearances during the week. The former Marion Harding High School standout tossed a five-hit shutout against Kenyon in the first game of a doubleheader before coming back to earn the save in the second game. In a 3-1 victory over Notre Dame, she allowed just one unearned run while striking out a career-high nine batters.

   On the season, Hines has posted an 8-4 record with three saves. In 75 innings of work, she has compiled a 1.31 earned run average with 48 strikeouts and only 10 walks. She has also thrown three shutouts.

   MVNC is currently 12-6 overall and in second place in the AMC with an 8-1 conference mark. The Lady Cougars are scheduled to host Shawnee State University in another AMC twinbill on Thursday at 3:00 p.m.
