Henry W. Spaulding II, Ph.D., Inaugurated as Seventh President of MVNU

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio - During a special ceremony on the morning of November 8, 2013, Henry W. Spaulding II, Ph.D., was inaugurated as the seventh president of Mount Vernon Nazarene University.
The ceremony, held in the R.R. Hodges Chapel Auditorium, was attended by a number of honored guests and dignitaries. Among them, Bruce Hawkins, President of the Mount Vernon City Council; Shane DeGarmo, Associate Vice Chancellor of Program Development and Approval of the Ohio Board of Regents; and Daniel Copp, Education Commissioner for the Church of the Nazarene, brought greetings from their respective organizations. Dr. Spaulding was joined by his wife Sharon and his family.
During the ceremony, charges to the President were issued by Dr. Spaulding's son, Henry W. Spaulding III; Brent Schnipke, President of MVNU's Student Government Association; B. Barnett Cochran, Vice President for Academic Affairs; Rev. Scott Sharpes, President of the MVNU Alumni Association; and Rev. Copp. These were issued on behalf of Dr. Spaulding's family, students, university faculty and staff, alumni, and the International Board of Education. Collegians Chorale and various instrumental ensembles performed the Alma Mater and the University Hymn, Be Thou My Vision.
Dr. Spaulding's Inaugural Address posed the question: What does Aldersgate have to do with Athens? Dr. Spaulding told the assembled faculty, staff, students, and friends of the University of his commitment to pursuing an intersection between faith and academia in the through the work of Mount Vernon Nazarene University. "We do not turn our minds off on Sunday," said Spaulding. "Nor do we turn our hearts off the rest of the week." Dr. Spaulding reaffirmed his commitment to leading the University to a place where Nazarene higher education would influence and also affirm the Christian calling.
A public reception honoring Dr. Spaulding's Inauguration and the Grand Opening of Ariel Arena was to be held at 5:30 p.m. inside the arena.
