Rev. Gary Hartke Receives Mount Vernon Nazarene University Citation of Merit Award

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana-Gary Hartke was honored with the Mount Vernon Nazarene University Citation of Merit award during a special ceremony at USA/Canada Nazarene Youth International Caucus on Friday, June 21. Every four years, Mount Vernon Nazarene University chooses to honor an individual whose contributions to the mission of MVNU and the Church of the Nazarene have made a lasting impact for the Kingdom. The award presentation was made during the NYI Caucus in recognition of Rev. Hartke's enormous impact on the ministry of NYI around the world.
"Rev. Hartke's vision and leadership have guided Nazarene Youth International into new territories, new ministry models, and a new millennium," said MVNU Vice President for University Relations Scott Peterson, who made the award presentation.
Rev. Gary Hartke, a 1980 graduate of MVNU, began his ministry as a youth pastor, serving at the Dayton Beavercreek Church of the Nazarene in Ohio, the South Portland Church of the Nazarene in Maine, and finally at Chicago First Church. During those years, Rev. Hartke also served as the Chicago Central District NYI President, a U.S.A. Central Region TEAM NYI Trainer, and as Teen Camp Director on all three districts. He was also the World Mission Candidate Coordinator for more than two years discovering, developing, and deploying missionaries.
As the Director of NYI, a position he has held since November of 2000, Rev. Hartke is responsible for coordinating and supervising the youth ministry of the Church of the Nazarene worldwide, which currently includes a membership of nearly half a million. Rev. Hartke holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Christian Education from Mount Vernon Nazarene University and a Master's degree in Church Management from Olivet Nazarene University.
