MVNU Presents "Up the Down Staircase"
October 31, 2013
MOUNT VERNON, Ohio - The Mount Vernon Nazarene University drama department will present "Up the Down Staircase" on October 31 and November 1 at 8 p.m., November 7 and 8 at 8 p.m., and on November 9 at 2 p.m. This event is open to the public.
"Up the Down Staircase" is about the experiences of a new teacher, Sylvia Barrett, trying to deal with the challenges faced by teenagers from lower-income homes and dysfunctional families. Set in the 1960s, this play successfully walks the line between drama and comedy, leaving the audience feeling inspired and amused. It is adapted from the semi-autobiographical novel of the same name by Bel Kaufman.
The play stars Bethany Nielson as Sylvia Barrett, Nick DeWalt as Joe Ferone, Clairanne Porter as Alice Blake, Wesley Boston as J. J. McHabe, Lauren Merritt as Bea Schachter, and Jared Wise as Paul Barringer, along with a large cast of supporting roles. "Up the Down Staircase" is directed by Bruce Jacklin, who has extensive experience in theater production in the community. This is his first time directing at MVNU.
Tickets can be purchased for "Up the Down Staircase" for $6 by calling 740-397-9000, ext. #1620.
