Marc Chagall was a Belarusian-Russian-French artist who lived from July 6, 1887 to March 28, 1985.
Art critic Robert Hughes has referred to Chagall as
"the quintessential Jewish artist of the twentieth century." Though considered an early modernist, Chagall worked in multiple artistic styles and mediums, including painting, book illustrations, stained glass, stage sets, ceramic, tapestries and fine art. During the period before World War I, he developed his own style centered on Eastern European Jewish folk culture. During the war, he became a prominent artist while living in Soviet Belarus. Throughout his career he remained an ardent Jewish artist while blending Symbolism, Cubism, and Fauvism.
