MVNU Hosts Bishop William Willimon

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio -- MVNU is pleased to host Reverend William H. Willimon, Bishop of the United Methodist Church, on Wednesday, March 6, at 10:20 a.m. in the R.R. Hodges Chapel Auditorium and at 7:15 p.m. at Lakeholm Church of the Nazarene. These events, part of MVNU's Lecture Artist Series, are free and open to the public.
From 2004 to 2012, Bishop William Willimon was Bishop of the United Methodist Church in Birmingham, Alabama, leading 792 Methodist pastors and 157,000 Methodist lay-people. Recently retired, Bishop Willimon has left his mark on Protestant churches across the country.
Bishop Willimon is a graduate of Wofford College, Yale Divinity School, and Emory University, and possesses honorary degrees from several other universities, including Birmingham-Southern College and Moravian Theological Seminary. He began his long and impressive career as a pastor of several churches in Georgia and South Carolina, and then became an Assistant Professor of Liturgy and Worship at Duke Divinity School, beginning in 1976. In addition, Willimon is also the prolific author of sixty books, the most noteworthy being Worship as Pastoral Care, 1982. This book was declared one of the ten most useful books for pastors in 1979 by the Academy of Parish Clergy, and has since sold over a million copies.
Bishop Willimon is a highly acclaimed speaker as well, named one of the twelve most effective preachers in 1996 by an international survey conducted by Baylor University. He has traveled around the world, speaking in the United States, Canada, Europe, and Asia. Other examples of his accomplishments include: lectureships at Princeton, Vanderbilt, Pepperdine, and Oxford; Distinguished Guest Professor at the University of Muenster, Germany; and vice chairman of the Board of Trustees, Wofford College, among many others.
