MVNU Board of Trustees Names Dr. Henry Spaulding Interim President
April 18, 2012
MOUNT VERNON, Ohio-Mount Vernon Nazarene University's Board of Trustees has elected Dr. Henry Spaulding, Provost and Chief Academic Officer, to serve as MVNU's Interim President during the presidential search and transition process. Dr. Daniel Martin resigned as MVNU's sixth President, effective July 1, after being elected President of Seattle Pacific University last week.
Rev. Geoff Kunselman, Chair of the MVNU Board of Trustees, announced the appointment to the campus community on April 17. "The Board of Trustees has great confidence in Dr. Spaulding and knows he will provide the needed leadership and continuity the University needs during this time," said Kunselman. "It is expected the daily life and mission of the University will continue to be pursued and fulfilled during these days. We are fortunate to have someone of Dr. Spaulding's stature and abilities to assume this key leadership role."
Spaulding has more than 30 years of experience in higher education, having served as a professor and administrator at Nazarene Theological Seminary, Eastern Nazarene College, and Trevecca Nazarene University, among other institutions. An ordained elder in the Church of the Nazarene, Spaulding has also pastored churches in Georgia, Kansas, Tennessee and Virginia.
"It has been my privilege to work very closely with Dr. Martin," said Spaulding. "I have worked close enough to him to know that he is genuinely committed to the proposition of Christian Higher Education. Our great loss is SPU's great gain." Spaulding added, "It will be my desire during the interim to provide continuity and energy to the University community as we build upon the vision of the University Plan as defined by Dr. Martin and endorsed by the Board of Trustees."
Rev. Kunselman indicated that the University will create a website, which will be a source of information about the presidential search process in the days to come. "It is our goal to elect MVNU's seventh president at the November 2012 Annual Meeting of the Board of Trustees. As we move through this process, we covet the prayers of the community as we seek the mind of Christ for this critical assignment."
