MVNU thrilled with new political science program

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio -- MVNU's Political Science program is already gaining traction in its inaugural year. Assistant Professor of Political Science, Dr. Christopher Devine, recently received the Henry R. Spenser award for Best Dissertation of 2010-2011, awarded by The Ohio State University's Political Science Department.
"I'm excited and blessed to be a part of MVNU and to help launch the new Political Science program," says Devine, "Political science is not only one of the most popular majors in the United States, but it is an ideal discipline for learning critical thinking and writing skills."
The number of prospective students who were showing interest in Political Science began to draw attention three years ago. Admissions Director James Smith worked directly with interested students and MVNU faculty and administration to explore the possibility of launching the program. Smith found that the number of students requesting a political science major only scratched the surface of the total interest. "In the course of three years, over 600 students listed Political Science as an interest," he said. "This means that over 600 students were potential political science majors."
Political Science is also a highly valuable degree for potential employers. More and more employers in fields and industries such as business, journalism, law, and public service are looking for qualified applicants with political science degrees. This is likely to drive additional growth for MVNU's program, as new and current students will continue seeking this versatile degree. Devine concurred, "I'm so grateful to see the enthusiasm for this program from the University faculty, administrators, and especially the students."
