"Fiber as Language" is intended to convey a very specific message - that fiber has always played an intricate role in society. Linda Shaffer, one of the featured artists, says, "Pictures have been language forever, and so has fiber. Fiber is a universal language." Shaffer adds that fiber has always been used intentionally to speak some sort of message, whether it is the color of the fabric one uses for curtains or a piece of clothing one wears. According to Shaffer, each piece displayed in this exhibit is meant to speak to the viewer just as it speaks to its own creator.

Many of the works featured in this show, including variations of hand or machine stitching, quilted imagery, collage, painting, basketry and weaving, were created through extensive processes that require focus on detail. This focus is translated in many diverse displays of beautifully crafted wall-hangings, installation pieces, and sculptures. Though a few of these pieces are not fiberworks themselves, every piece displayed in this show explicitly connects back to the theme of "Fiber as Language." In addition to Shaffer, other featured artists include Jamie Henry, Ellen Sheffield, Elaine Hartley, Jane Kimmel, Dixie Gabric, Beth Crowder, Corrine Lund, Jeanna Mullendore, Jo Rice, Deborah Yorde and Mary Fernandez Stewart.
