The awards for the juried show are to be announced. Ohio Arts League juror, Liz Maugans, states: "It was exciting to see so many works that offered deep didactic investigations into compelling narratives, re-contextualized content and essentialism -- 'the necessary components' to achieve said intentions. I responded to works with clear-sightedness and less finicky and mannered processing. I was attracted to submissions where I was unsure of their exact origins, their positioning, time frame or specific subject. I loved work that made me wonder and wander a bit. The most successful works provided an authorship and perspective that was unique, fresh and innovative. I gravitated to work that also spoke to this specific time in history -- work that was not timeless, but very determined to connect to the anxiety and uncertainty of our era. I am very suspect of beauty, whether it be the veneer of an object or just for sheer escapism."

Maugans, cofounder and Managing Director of Zygote Press Inc., received her B.F.A. in printmaking from Kent State University. She received her M.F.A. from Cranbrook Academy of Art in 1992 and currently teaches printmaking and drawing at the Cleveland Institute of Art and Loraine County Community College.

"Personally, I like the subterranean levels, darker, brooding ideations that digs me in deeper and to an emotional place," Maugans says, "The caliber of works was very impressive and I appreciate the opportunity given to me by the Ohio Art League."
