Pianist Oni Buchanan to bring contemporary women’s music to MVNU
February 22, 2010
MOUNT VERNON, Ohio -- Oni Buchanan, internationally recognized pianist and poet, will bring her newest concert series, " In the Moment: Women Composers of the 21st Century,” to the Mount Vernon Nazarene University chapel stage on Tuesday, March 8, at 7:30 p.m. as part of the 2010-11 Lecture/Artist series.
There will also be a master piano class on Monday, March 7, from 1:30-3 p.m. in the chapel that is open to the public.
Young American pianist Oni Buchanan employs her ingenious musical ability to construct concert experiences full of originality that "directly engage the intimate connections between music and the visual arts, music and poetry.”
Since then, the group has performed at lounges, clubs, hotels, festivals and concerts all around the Columbus area, while continually appearing every Thursday at the 94th Aero Squadron and Fridays at the Vonn Jazz Lounge. They have released four recordings.
She has performed solo recitals throughout the U.S. and abroad; her discography includes three solo piano CDs on the Velvet Ear Records label.
Buchanan graduated from the University of Virginia with a bachelor’s degree in music and went on to receive her master’s degree in piano performance from the New England Conservatory of Music. She also holds a B.A. in English from the University of Virginia and an M.F.A. in poetry from the Iowa Writers’ Workshop. In addition to her music, Buchanan has published multiple collections of poetry.
This concert will feature solo piano works written by women composers since the year 2000 which fluctuate between different levels of texture and transparency, sound and approach, and duration. Some pieces develop from the format of children’s songs, salsa, blues, rave music and alternative rock, while others return to the foundations of sonata, ballade, toccata and etude. Despite the diversity in musical approaches, all pieces feature an authenticity that, when performed, create a web of patterns and obsessions.
The event is free and open to the public. For more information on the artist, visit www.onibuchanan.com. For more information about this event or the Lecture/Artist Series, call (740) 397-9000, ext. 4341, or visit www.mvnu.edu/lectureartist.
