Justice, a sophomore video and radio broadcasting major from Springfield, Ohio, placed third in the INRB TV Music Video category. He filmed and produced an original video to the song “Pieces,” by the Christian rock band Red. It can be viewed at www.youtube.com/user/MVNUVideoProd.

"I had been listening to the song before I knew about INRB,” said Justice, “and when I knew I wanted to do a music video, that was the song I wanted. I think the message of the song is that people are broken. We're broken and we are on this earth thinking we have control and can make it right ourselves. We can't. We're broken into pieces and only God can make us whole again.”

The video follows a young man struggling with tobacco and alcohol, played by Justice, and a friend who is trying to encourage and pray for him, played by MVNU sophomore Madison Layton. “At the beginning, I am complaining about how I have tried to ask for forgiveness but I don't feel any better about myself,” says Justice. “God wants a commitment. He doesn't want us to only come to Him to get our troubles off our back then go back out and collect more troubles. He wants us to come to Him to make a commitment to stay with Him. Toward the end of the video, my character realizes those things can’t make him whole, only God can."

After producing an initial version of the video, Justice made contact with Red’s manager in Oklahoma, who gave approval for use of the song in the contest.

Students placing in the top three for each category will be honored on Sunday, Feb. 28, at the National Religious Broadcasters Convention in Nashville, Tenn., for their participation in the 2010 INRB competition. This is the fourth consecutive year MVNU students have placed nationally in either radio or video. In addition to his video work, Justice is a co-host on “The Morning Thing” on campus radio station WNZR 90.9 FM.

Students taking the Radio Practicum and Advanced Video Production classes this fall submitted projects following the INRB guidelines, and the top projects were then evaluated and entered into the contest. “This was the first year we submitted both radio and video entries to INRB, so we were thrilled to find out Mitch’s video had placed in the top three,” said Joe Rinehart, instructor of communication and director of Broadcasting. “The advantage of this competition is that the projects are judged by communication faculty and professionals across the country. When the judging sheets are sent back to us, the students get additional feedback on how their work was evaluated and how they can improve.”

The intercollegiate branch of NRB is committed to promoting excellence and integrity, and providing a forum for student and faculty members to network and share ideas and goals. Each year, many student members submit entries to the Student Production Awards competition. There are six radio categories, six video categories and one Internet category in which students compete with their peers from other colleges and universities.
