This summer a portable three-camera video switcher was purchased to allow students to do multi-camera productions in the Thorne Library’s TV studio and across campus. Video broadcasting students recently completed their first production of "CougarNet News," which was launched in October on YouTube. This is MVNU's first attempt at video news.

Students begin the video broadcasting curriculum with an introductory course in video production, and then advance to the Video Practicum class. Practicum focuses on practical experience in video production, giving students potential material for their portfolios. The instructor works in the role of an executive producer to oversee the projects.

In the last year, students taking the course have produced videos for Knox County’s Food For The Hungry drive, and assisted MVNU’s Marketing Department with several promotional pieces. With this experience under their belts, students are now gaining additional valuable assistance. Amy Rogan, assistant news director at the Ohio News Network (ONN), is serving as adjunct instructor for the video practicum class. With her experience in the newsroom, she is teaching students how to properly write, direct and produce news.

"This is a very exciting time for our department,” says Joe Rinehart, an instructor in communication and director of broadcasting for MVNU. “To start a campus news presence not only blends skills from our journalism and broadcasting majors, but Amy’s expertise in TV news is giving our students a top-notch educational experience."
