As a professor of sociology and religious studies, Finke often speaks about the religious shape of the United States and the world, and some of the trends involving people and the direction of their spirituality. He has co-authored, along with Rodney Stark, “The Churching of America, 1776-1990: Winners and Losers in our Religious Economy” and “Acts of Faith: Explaining the Human Side of Religion,” which received the 2001 Book Award from the American Sociological Association's Sociology of Religion Section.

"Several of my current research projects are looking at cross-national variation in religious regulation, persecution and violence,” Finke explained. “But I remain interested and involved in studying religious organizations and the diverse religious market in America.”

He holds a Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Washington and has been published in numerous academic publications, including the American Sociological Review and The Journal for the Scientific Study of Religion. Finke serves as the director of the Association of Religion Data Archives and president of the Association of the Study of Religion, Economics, and Culture.
