PRESS RELEASE -- February 18, 2009
Improv duo uses humor to tackle big questions
MOUNT VERNON, Ohio -- Mad Dogs and Englishmen are coming to Mount Vernon Nazarene University--only they’ll be more preoccupied with central Texas than Liverpool, and there won’t actually be any dogs.
The improv and comedy duo known as Mad Dogs and Englishmen will present "Sweet River County: A Redneck Fairytale" on Wednesday, Feb. 18, at 7:15 p.m. in the R.R. Hodges Chapel/Auditorium.
This comedic performance, the first MVNU Lecture/Artist Series event of the spring semester, is free and open to the public.
"Sweet River County" is a wacky comedy about the Bumas/Haller family of central Texas. Built on the model of Greater Tuna, "Sweet River County" explores the misconceptions we have about the difficulties of life here on this earth. Does God have it out for us? Is He a huge cosmic foot ready to flatten us like bugs? Sweet River County takes a long look at that and makes us laugh along the way.
The play starts with the demise of Chester Haller, the 99-year-old patriarch of the Haller family. He fell asleep at the dinner table, dropped head first into his chili, sucked two beans up his nose and suffocated. His daughter Lurlene is convinced it is one more sign the family is cursed.
Mad Dogs and Englishmen are an improv comedy duo that stomps on the audience’s funny bone while challenging individuals in their daily lives. They are veterans of over 30 years of combined professional theatre, music, radio, film and television experience.
