Nearly 400 set to graduate from MVNU

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio -- Dr. Henry Spaulding, new vice president for Academic Affairs at Mount Vernon Nazarene University, will speak to 399 graduating students at this spring’s MVNU commencement. Ceremonies will be held on Saturday, May 23, in the R.R. Hodges Chapel/Auditorium, with traditional undergraduate students at 10 a.m., and adult and graduate students at 2:30 p.m.
Spaulding was named to the position at MVNU in November 2008 and is now a part of MVNU’s senior leadership team. He most recently served as director of the Master of Divinity program and professor of philosophical theology and Christian ethics at Nazarene Theological Seminary (NTS) in Kansas City, Missouri.
Before serving at NTS, Spaulding was the dean of arts and sciences and professor of theology and philosophy at Trevecca Nazarene University in Tennessee. He also served as the director of the graduate program in religion while at Trevecca. Prior to that, Spaulding was senior pastor of First Church of the Nazarene in Woodbridge, Va. He was professor of religion at Eastern Nazarene College (ENC) in Massachusetts from 1982-1992. Before serving at ENC, he served as senior pastor at First Church of the Nazarene in Thomasville, Ga.
Spaulding earned a B.A. degree in religion and history from Trevecca in 1974, a M.Div. degree from Nazarene Theological Seminary in 1977 and a Ph.D. in religion studies/humanities from Florida State University in 1982.
He has written a book, as well as several articles for Holiness Today, Come Ye Apart and Illustrated Life. He contributed to the Wesley Study Bible and is active with the Wesleyan Theological Society where he has published several scholarly articles and book reviews. He served as the chairperson of the Commission on the Doctrine of the Church of the Nazarene for the 1989 General Assembly.
Spaulding is married to Sharon, a second-grade teacher, and they have three adult children: Shelly (31), Megan (23) and Hank (21).
Degree breakdowns for MVNU’s 2009 commencement include: 3 Associate of Arts, 2 Associate of Applied Science, 156 Bachelor of Arts, 49 Bachelor of Science, 17 Bachelor of Social Work, 32 Bachelor of Business Administration, 7 Master of Ministry, 70 Master of Arts in Education, 16 Master of Science in Management and 47 Master of Business Administration. The traditional undergraduate class represents 49 different majors, 13 states and 2 other countries (Canada and South Korea).
A baccalaureate service will be held at 7 p.m. on Friday, May 22, in the R.R. Hodges Chapel/Auditorium, with a dessert reception following.
