Scharen to address faith in popular culture at MVNU
MOUNT VERNON, Ohio -- Dr. Ralph Wood will be the featured speaker in Mount Vernon Nazarene University’s Lecture/Artist series “Imagination and the Kingdom of God” on Thursday, Oct. 4.
He will be speaking on “J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings: A Book for Our Time of Terror” at 7:30 p.m. in Thorne Performance Hall in the R.R. Hodges Chapel/Auditorium. The event is free and open to the public.

Wood has served as the undergraduate president of the Texas Baptist Student Union, as well as a teacher, deacon and lay preacher in local Baptist churches. He has also been a lecturer and retreat leader in Episcopal, Presbyterian and Methodist Churches, in addition to teaching at Wake Forest University, the University of North Carolina, Samford University and Baylor University.
Among Wood’s published books are Contending for the Faith: The Church’s Engagement with Culture; The Gospel According to Tolkien: Visions of the Kingdom in Middle-earth and Flannery O’Connor and the Christ-Haunted South. Wood also works as editor-at-large for the publication Christian Century.
Wood earned both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in English from Texas A&M - Commerce. He received another master’s and a doctorate from the University of Chicago Divinity School.
