MVNU celebrates Women's History Month
MOUNT VERNON, Ohio -- National Women’s History Month is a time to come together to emphasize women and their contributions and impact to our history.
Mount Vernon Nazarene University will host many different activities during March to celebrate today’s women of all ages and backgrounds along with those who came before us. All events are open to the general public.
Film Series
On Saturday, March 29 (NEW DATE!), a film festival will showcase women who helped positively define women's roles and identity. The viewing will take place in Thorne Performance Hall from 12 p.m.-5 p.m. Movies will include "Iron-Jawed Angels," where defiant young activists take the women's suffrage movement by storm, putting their lives at risk to help American women win the right to vote; "A League of Their Own," telling the story of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League that helped to save America’s favorite pastime; and "Selena," the true-life story of Selena Quintanilla-Perez, a young Latino singer on her way to fame in America who was tragically murdered at age 23.
Panel Discussion
Following on Thursday, March 13, MVNU Professor Karen Boyd will present a historical overview of the women's movement with a special focus on voting. After the presentation, a panel including students, faculty and community representatives, will discuss women in leadership roles and their impact. The presentation and discussion will take place in Free Enterprise Business Center, room 133, from 7-9 p.m.
Poster/Essay Contest
Finally on Thursday, March 27, an art/essay contest will be held for all faculty/staff and students. Contestants are asked to make either an artwork or write an essay celebrating women and/or femininity. Prizes will be awarded for best artwork, best essay and people's choice selected by attendees on that evening. Entries must be turned in to Trudy Singletary no later than 4 p.m. on Tuesday, March 25, on the second floor of the Jennie K. Moore building. The contest will take place in the Prince Student Union from 7-9 p.m., and winners will have a chance to speak about their project. About Women's History Month
The first International Women’s Day was celebrated on March 8, 1910. In 1978, a California school district participated in the first Women’s History Week. After seeing the growing popularity of the event, in 1981, Congress passed a resolution making the week-long event a national holiday. Then, in 1987, the National Women’s History Project petitioned Congress to expand the week to a month, and it succeeded. The goal of the celebration is to heighten awareness and help demonstrate how American women from all walks of life have made historic contributions to the growth and strength of our nation in countless ways.
