PRESS RELEASE -- Spring 2008
Seminar series on “War & Peace” presented at MVNU
MOUNT VERNON, Ohio -- The Honors Program at Mount Vernon Nazarene University is presenting “War & Peace” as its spring 2008 Honors Seminar series.
Any interested community members are invited to attend presentations in the seminar series.
About the Series
From both a practical and an ethical standpoint, the question of war is a concern for Christians and others. Throughout the history of the world and the church, war has been a reality and an issue. This series of seminars will look at the issues of war and differing views of the proper Christian response to and involvement in both war and peace.
Six sessions are open to the public. The first of these was held on Feb. 4. The second will be Monday, Feb. 11, called “Just-War Theory: An Alternative Christian Response,” by Dr. Doug Matthews. He will present the history and elements of the Just War Theory traditionally used by the church to guide its response to war.
Monday, March 3, will be the third in the series, called “The Crusades: The Church Wages War.” Presented by Dr. Barney Cochran, this session will discuss the crusades: history, causes, objectives, conduct and the role of the church.
Session four will be on Monday, March 10, called “A House Divided: The American Civil War and the Church.” Dr. Bill Wantland will explore the church’s influence and role in the American Civil War; the implications of brother against brother, neighbor against neighbor, Christian against Christian.
Monday, March 31, will be session five on “World War II: Christian Response in Germany” by Dr. Paul Mayle. This session will focus on the response of the German church to the rise of Hitler, and the role of Dietrich Bonhoefer.
The final session will be held on Monday, April 14, on “Iraq, Afghanistan and the War on Terror.” A panel will present differing views of the War in Iraq, Afghanistan and the war on terror from a Christian perspective.
All sessions are from 6:30-7:30 p.m. in Faculty Hall, room 105, on the MVNU campus. For further information, please contact Dr. Tom Beutel, Honors Program coordinator, at (740) 397-9000, ext. 3225, or e-mail tbeutel@mvnu.edu.
