PRESS RELEASE -- March 28, 2008

KCH, Hospice benefit from MVNU's Think Pink event

Coach Steve Gregory with Charlie Brenneman
MOUNT VERNON, Ohio -- Mount Vernon Nazarene University is proud to have raised $1,250 through its Think Pink event in February.

Held in conjunction with the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association’s (WBCA) Think Pink initiative, the MVNU Lady Cougars basketball team, facing off against Walsh University, joined with collegiate teams across the country to host fundraising events in support of cancer research.

The funds raised were divided among two local organizations and one in Columbus: $750 to the Foundation of Knox Community Hospital, $250 to Hospice of Knox County and $250 to the James Cancer Hospital/Solove Research Institute. Carol Garner, director for Development at Knox Community Hospital, and Charlie Brenneman, chair of the Foundation for the hospital, were on hand to receive the check, presented by MVNU’s women’s head basketball coach Steve Gregory.

The funds given to Knox Community Hospital will be used for its 2008 digital mammography fundraising campaign. As an advantage over traditional x-ray film, a digital mammogram stores images on a computer, which means faster and more accurate exams. Medical research showed digital mammography detected up to 22 percent more incidences of cancer than standard mammograms in younger women.

The WBCA’s Think Pink initiative is a global, unified effort to assist in raising breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond. Think Pink began in 2007 with more than 120 schools participating to make the inaugural event a success. This year, the involvement grew tremendously as 830 teams participated during the week of February 8-17. MVNU hopes to make Think Pink an annual event for the campus and community.

For more information about Think Pink, or if you’d like to help sponsor next year’s event, please contact Jodi Bryant at (740) 397-9000, ext. 4352.
