Two MVNU professors honored by Ohio magazine for Excellence in Education

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio -- Mount Vernon Nazarene University professors Dr. Doug Matthews and Chris Neuenschwander were featured in the December issue of Ohio magazine as 2007 “Excellence in Education” honorees.

Matthews and Neuenschwander were two of 139 individuals nominated from colleges and universities throughout Ohio.

Dr. Doug K. MatthewsDr. Doug Matthews, professor of religion, received his B.A. from Spring Arbor University, his M.A. from Wheaton College and his Ph.D. from Baylor University. Matthews has held many education-related positions throughout his career. He was the director of resident life at LeTourneau University and an associate professor at Toccoa Fall College. During his time at MVNU, he has served as professor of religion, assistant to the chaplain, vice president of enrollment services and student development and professor of theology. Matthews is also very involved with several church-based ministries and a variety of committees. He is also a member of the Evangelical Philosophical Society and the Society of Christian Philosophers. In his classes, Matthews is known for being a student-centered and challenging professor who is passionate about teaching.

Matthews and his wife Carol, director of academic support at MVNU, reside in Fredericktown, Ohio.

Chris NeuenschwanderChris Neuenschwander, assistant professor of business, received his M.S. in accounting from Mount Vernon Nazarene University and his M.B.A. from Ashland University. He started teaching at MVNU in 2005. Prior to that, Neuenschwander served as a senior financial analyst at Holophane, as a senior accountant for The Longaberger Company and as a financial analyst at Bank One. He is also a member of the Ohio Society of Certified Public Accountants and the Institute of Management Accountants. One student said that Professor Neuenschwander is an excellent teacher who always takes the extra time and effort to ensure less knowledgeable accounting students fully understand complex concepts.

Neuenschwander is married to Teresa and resides in Newark, Ohio.
