Goliards present “A Celebration of A Capella Music”
MOUNT VERNON, Ohio -- Goliards, Mount Vernon Nazarene University’s chamber choir, will present their spring concert on Thursday, May 8, at 8 p.m., in Thorne Performance Hall, located within the R.R. Hodges Chapel/Fine Arts Center.
In the late 16th century, Johann Jeep wrote, “Music, most wondrous lovely art, with great respect we raise you; both young and old we praise you, and find our hearts refreshed!” This early madrigal will be one of 11 selections of early choral music, spanning the mid-13th century to America’s colonial era, which will be performed during the concert.
Other Renaissance composers performed will include Thomas Morley, Pierre Certon, Orlando di Lasso, Josquin des Pres, William Billings, Jean Richafort and Thomas Ravenscroft. The ensemble will also perform Creek Indian and African ethnic music as well as some arrangements of favorite spirituals, more contemporary selections such as “Happy Together” and “On My Own” and a selection by Stephen Foster.
Goliards will be performing selection from this concert in seven area schools and retirement centers in our community. The campus concert is free and open to the public.
