MVNU Goliards present a cappella concert

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio -- There will be “A Song in the Air” at 8 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 6, in Thorne Performance Hall at Mount Vernon Nazarene University. Indeed, not just one song, but many, performed by MVNU’s 12-voice a cappella chamber choir, the Goliards.

This free concert will included three main groups of music. The first section will include several Renaissance madrigals by composers such as Donato, Banchieri, di Lasso, Dowland and Ravenscroft, as well as a Lennon-McCartney tune, “Can’t Buy Me Love,” originally arranged in English madrigal style for the King’s Singers.

The second group will include sacred motets and works as well as a number of spirituals with representative composers such as William Billings and Moses Hogan. The concluding group will feature Christmas selections from the 16th and 17th centuries by Billings, Michael Praetorius, Johann Walter and others. There will also be several familiar carol arrangements such as “Wassail Carol,” “Away in the Manger,” “Sussex Carol” and “The Virgin Mary had a Baby Boy.”
