Simple Way Founder Claiborne visits MVNU
MOUNT VERNON, Ohio -- Up-and-coming, self-proclaimed “ordinary radical” Shane Claiborne will be the featured guest speaker at Mount Vernon Nazarene University on Wednesday, Feb. 13, at 10:20 a.m. in the R.R. Hodges Chapel/Auditorium.
Claiborne is the founder of a New Monastic community, The Simple Way, in Pittsburgh, Pa., a community focused on loving God and loving others. “Each of us is created for community, and in the image of community. And yet everything in the world tries to rob us of this divine gift,” according to The Simple Way web site. “The life of the simple way is the story of that struggle to love and to be loved. The most radical thing we do is choose to love each other... again and again.”
He is the author of The Irresistible Revolution: Living as an Ordinary Radical and is a board member of the Christian Community Development Association, one of the largest national associations of faith-based organizations whose pillars are redistribution, relocation and reconciliation.
Claiborne has spent time in Baghdad with the Iraq Peace Team where he took daily trips to areas that had been bombed, visited hospitals and families, and attended church servicesall during the height of war. He also spent ten weeks working alongside Mother Teresa in Calcutta.
A graduate from Eastern University in St. Davids, Pa., he studied sociology and youth ministry. He completed some graduate work at Princeton Theological Seminary and is currently part of The Alternative Seminary in Philadelphia, where he resides. Claiborne writes and travels extensively speaking about peacemaking, social justice and Jesus. His newest book, Jesus for President, will be released in March 2008.
