Brueggemann’s primary concern is the interpretation of Scripture for the business of preaching and understanding of Christian faith for the church community. He links Scripture with human experience—not directly, but through the imaginative interpretation of Biblical metaphors, myths and symbols which were the natural form of expression of the biblical writers. He sees the main object of faith that is grounded in Scripture as the transformation of human life, and this, he thinks, is not achieved by expounding doctrine or ethics or by historical criticism. He believes it is through the telling of stories, in vivid images and analogies, that human imagination is stirred to receive the word of God in Scripture.

Brueggemann is perhaps best known for his appearances with Bill Moyers in the PBS series “Genesis: A Living Conversation.” The series explored stories found in the biblical book of Genesis and their possible meanings in today’s world. Considered one of the world’s foremost experts on the Old Testament, he has written or contributed to over 70 different works.

Garnering countless recognition over his career, including being inducted as an honorary member of the British Society for Old Testament Study, Brueggemann is an honorary admiral in the Nebraska Navy, has received numerous honorary degrees from universities across the United States and is an ordained minister with the United Church of Christ. He also serves as a frequent lecturer with 34 different lecture series and is a contributing editor to Sojourners, Journal for Preachers and Christian Century.

Brueggemann is currently a Professor of Old Testament at Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur, Ga. He has also taught at Eden Theological Seminary in Missouri and has served as a visiting lecturer at Cambridge University. Born in Tilden, Nebraska, Brueggemann received a bachelor’s degree in Old Testament from Eden Theological Seminary, a Th.D. in Old Testament from Union Theological Seminary and a Ph.D. in education from St Louis University.
