January art exhibit to showcase work of local elementary students
MOUNT VERNON, Ohio -- Local elementary students get a chance to show off their creative sides in "Art is Elementary," a public exhibit of their artwork during the month of January at Mount Vernon Nazarene University.
An opening reception will be held in the Art Gallery, located in the R.R. Hodges Chapel/Auditorium on Sunday, Jan. 6, from 2-4 p.m.
From the Curator
“Our goal was to find a way to encourage youngsters to keep making art,” said MVNU Gallery Curator Lori Wilkes. “Many times these children don’t have a venue apart from their school hallways. This is a public showing of their work. We’re expecting over 100 entries.” The entire community is invited to see the surprising talents of these budding young artists.
About the Show
Schools participating include Columbia, East, Dan Emmett, Pleasant Street, St. Vincent, Twin Oak and Wiggin Street. Teachers have selected their top three artists in each grade, first through fifth. The top three in each grade from the entire show will be awarded a special prize. Ashland artist and former MVNU exhibitor Linda McFarlin will serve as juror for the show.
From a Local Teacher
“Lori Wilkes and MVNU have offered a wonderful opportunity for our young artists to participate in a juried art opening,” said Bruce Jacklin, art teacher at Pleasant Street Elementary. “This is an experience they will long remember.”
