Columbus artist focuses on realism in MVNU show

Dennis Drummond artwork
MOUNT VERNON, Ohio -- Dennis Drummond, a Columbus-based artist, will exhibit his paintings in MVNU’s art gallery during the month of February.

The show, called "It's Not About Flowers," runs from Feb. 1-29, with an opening reception on Sunday, Feb. 3, from 2-4 p.m. in the art gallery, located within the R.R. Hodges Chapel/Fine Arts Center.

Drummond’s work can be viewed at Julian Contemporary Art in Cleveland, Ohio; the Joie Lassiter Gallery in Charlotte, North Carolina; and Art Access Gallery in Bexley, Ohio. His work is also included in numerous private collections.

His paintings focus on realism and design, utilizing objects, color and light as vehicles. “I don’t divorce myself from my fascination with the sense of reality during my pursuit of a design emphasis. On the contrary, I chase after it,” Drummond explained. “I pursue that reality to the point that I make my own, I create objects, spaces and light to please my work.”

He says he was an abstract/non-objective painter for many of his early years as an artist, and that mentality still dictates to his art today. “While I am a realist, I am not a slave to the objects nor the situations but, as with my early works, design orders how I see and what I do,” said Drummond. “Light, color, value, and shape are stimuli for the production of my work.”

He received a Master of Fine Arts from Syracuse University, and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Cleveland Institute of Art. He is currently a professor emeritus at the Columbus College of Art & Design, where he taught numerous courses in painting and drawing from 1968 to 2005. He was nominated for "Who's Who Among American Teachers" 14 times.

Drummond currently resides in Columbus, Ohio, with his wife Sally.

Regular gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., weekends by appointment only. For more information, visit www.mvnu.edu or contact (740) 392-6868, ext. 4341.
