Music Department Concerts a Highlight of MVNU Homecoming Weekend
MOUNT VERNON, Ohio — The Mount Vernon Nazarene University Music Department will present two concerts on Saturday, Nov. 11, 2017, as part of the annual Homecoming Weekend Celebration. Both concerts are free and open to the public.
The Collegians Chorale, Goliards Chamber Choir, Treble Singers Women’s Choir, Symphonic Wind Ensemble, Chamber Winds, and Flute Choir will present a joint concert at 1 p.m. in the R.R. Hodges Chapel Auditorium.
Treble Singers Women’s Choir and Collegians Chorale will join forces on “Hope for Resolution” arranged by Paul Caldwell and Sean Ivory. The piece combines the plainsong “Of the Father’s Love Begotten” with the South African freedom song “Thula sizwe.” The Symphonic Wind Ensemble will be accompanied by a number of alumni guest performers in presenting Samuel Hazo’s “Arabesque.”
The alumni soloist to be featured this year will be pianist Sutton (Massie ’15) Higginbotham. In her four years at MVNU, she studied piano under the auspices of Dr. JoAnn Koh-Baker, performed as a soloist and accompanist in numerous recitals, competed in the Knox Young Musician Competition, and presented at the inaugural symposium for undergraduate research and creative work at MVNU.
Upon earning her B.A. in Music Performance and A.A.S. in Business Administration in 2015, Sutton has now embarked on running a successful and large piano studio in West Virginia, as well as teaching at Teays Valley Christian School as the music teacher, band, and choral director.
The MVNU Jazz Band and Combo will also perform at 3 p.m. in the Prince Student Union. They will present a program of jazz, pop, and Broadway standards including material from Stan Kenton, Woody Herman, Buddy Rich, Dean Martin, and more, as well as vocal selections highlighting current MVNU music students Kathryn Suggs and Allen Terwilliger.
