Student Teaching in England
Through a program developed by the education department three
education majors, Meredith Owen, Angie Statler and Becca Wojniak,
did their student teaching this year in Skelmersdale, a small
town in central England. The arrangements were made with Edge
Hill University in Ormskirk, England. Meredith and Becca were
there during the spring semester and Angie was there in the fall.
Education professor, Dr. Fred Kreamelmeyer, initiated the program
at MVNC after participating in a similar program while he was
an education student at Ball State University. Dr. Kreamelmeyer
explained, "The British school system was selected because
of its cultural diversity and lack of language barrier."
According to Dr. Kreamelmeyer, the British schools have a history
of innovation which has influenced the American educational system
for many years.
n her experience, Meredith noticed that there were fewer students
in the schools, usually one class per grade level. "My assigned
school had community involvement, no bussing, and a relaxed atmosphere,"
she commented. "The parents and teachers all knew each other
and this contributed to neighborhood ownership of the school",
Meredith continued. She found this to be positive for the students.
Spanish education major, Becca Wojniak observed that in England
they teach foreign languages with an emphasis on hearing and
speaking. "I plan to incorperate this strategy when I begin
my teaching career because I have seen how effective it is for
students learning a language," explained Becca.
In addition to their student teaching experience the girls were
able to travel. Becca visited distant relatives on a trip to
Poland. The students also explored historic spots all around
England. The education department plans to continue this program
and is sending students again next fall.
