Important Tax Changes
Effective in 2008 (Jim Dalton)
Every
year Congress enacts a number of tax law changes that impact ministries and
churches. Court discussions and IRS rulings also provide clarification on a
number of important tax issues annually. Jim Dalton will lead us through the
most important changes as outlined in the Church & Clergy Tax Guide, 2008
Edition.
Saturday Elective Seminars:
Seminar 1
8:30-10 a.m.
**NEW**
QuickBooks For Nazarene Churches (Lowell Flint)
QuickBooks is used by more small businesses than any other financial software by
a wide margin and can serve a church's financial needs. Lowell, Treasurer at
West Chester Church of the Nazarene, has developed a chart of accounts and
system of generating the Pastor's Annual Report in "no hassle" fashion from this
accounting program.
Church Reporting Requirements (Karol Scholz)
This is a complete overview of reporting requirements necessary to comply with
federal/state/local laws including payroll processing, differences in
ministerial and non-ministerial employees, and compliance issues. This is
recommended for new treasurers and those with questions about reporting.
Structuring Advantageous Ministerial Compensation Packages (David Johnston)
Self-employment taxes, medical and expense reimbursements, housing allowance, parsonages, retirement
and salary, when properly structured will benefit the church as well as net the
most for the Pastor. Pastors, finance committee chairs and treasurers will
benefit from this information.
The Pastor's Report and Fund Assignments (Mark Lail)
This updated seminar is a review of the financial data impacting the annual
Nazarene Pastor's Report upon which fund assignments are calculated. It
provides tips on reporting accurately and avoiding costly mistakes.

Seminar 2
10:20 a.m.-11:50 a.m.
**NEW** Preaching For Stewardship (Mark Lail)
We live in a financially irresponsible world. Americans are drowning in debt and
seemingly don't care. They are also unnaturally attached to their possessions.
But the Church's CEO said that, “where your treasure is, there your heart
will be also” and he hasn't changed his mind about tithing. This seminar is
an exploration of the biblical concept of stewardship.
Charitable Contributions (Karol
Scholz)
The church has a responsibility to
report and/or receipt contributions of cash, goods or property. Proper handling
of contributions can prevent problems for both the donor and the recipient
organization. Case scenarios of designated contributions are included for a
complete understanding of the charitable process.
Pastor and Treasurer;
Relationships and Ethics (David Johnston)
Learn how a healthy working
relationship between pastor and church treasurer and an ethical association with
church finances can develop and communicate the integrity of a church's money
handling systems.
Questions and Answers with the Expert (Jim Dalton)
Having served as the treasurer at Grove
City Nazarene for 13 years and having over 20 years teaching experience as
Professor of Accounting, Jim Dalton, BBA Department Chairman for Adult and
Graduate Studies at MVNU will answer your questions about church finances.
Discussion will be interactive and beneficial for all participants.
Noon - 1 p.m. Lunch in the MVNU Dining Commons
Seminar 3
1:10-2:40 p.m.
Treasuring the Church 101 (Karol Scholz)
Caring for
God's money is a ministry! This seminar includes practical information about
fund accounting such as: setting up a chart of accounts, recording designated
funds, separation of duties and reporting quality information to the church
board.
The Annual Audit and Keeping Records That Make It Easy (Mark Lail)
Good
accounting records and good stewardship go hand in hand. The annual audit is a
beneficial evaluation tool that helps us achieve our best as trustees of our
portion of the Kingdom. This seminar focuses on the implementation of a
complete and practical internal audit with minimal information about external
audits.
Financial Freedom Feels Fine
(David Johnston)
Financial matters affect the rest of life—spiritually, emotionally and physically. Dave
Johnston is a practical presenter who puts the best advice for life planning
into the context of service to Christ.
