COURSE DESCRIPTIONS
NUR3043Transition to Professional Nursing [3]
Transitions from technical to professional nursing will be explored. This course seeks to assist students in developing a vision for professional nursing practice within the context of Mount Vernon Nazarene University’s philosophy and conceptual framework. Updates in nursing informatics are included.
NUR3003Integrated Science for Nurses [3]
Evolutions in nursing science will be examined to prepare students for future practice as professional nurses. The focus is on advances in nursing science over the past ten years, including the human genome project, bio-ethical issues, and developments in biological and social sciences. Christian and transhumanistic worldviews are contrasted.
NUR3033Gerontological Nursing [3]
Explore theories of aging and the role of the gerontological nurse. Physiological, psychosocial, and economic adaptations of older adults in the health care system will be examined. Core competencies in geriatric nursing will be explicated.
NUR3023Health Assessment for RNs [3]
This course builds upon basic knowledge of holistic health assessment across the lifespan, with a focus on advanced assessment techniques. Focus gerontological aspects will be explicated.
NUR3042Evidence Based Nursing Care [2]
The purpose of this course is to explore nursing knowledge development through empirical testing, personal, ethical and aesthetic knowledge. The role of the baccalaureate prepared nurse in research and knowledge development is explored.
NUR4004Nursing Concepts in Community Health [4]
Principles of health promotion are explored within a framework of epidemiology. Primary, secondary, and tertiary care based on the Healthy People’s identified target areas will be emphasized. The role of the nurse in advocating for healthy communities is described. Community resources for older adults are emphasized.
NUR4022Nursing Theory [2]
Nursing knowledge development is explored through use of grand, mid-range and practice level theory. A critical analysis of the metaparadigm of concern for nurses is completed.
NUR4033Integrated Liberal Arts for Nursing [3]
A course designed to engage students in structured conversations to solve complex problems related to the human experience. Examples from history, fine arts, literature, and social sciences, are used to form the basis for reasoning and determining practice solutions.
NUR4088Clinical Nurse Leadership [8]
A capstone, senior year experience emphasizing essential leadership skills of baccalaureate prepared nurses. This course integrates knowledge from the liberal arts, and nursing sciences to study complex medical surgical health problems of older adults. Students will manage groups of clients in a variety of healthcare settings.
NUR4092Management Issues in Nursing Practice [2]
Key concepts related to the role of the nurse as manager are examined. Theories of planned change are explored.
BIB3033Foundations of a Biblical Worldview [3]
This course will explore the biblical perspective on God and His relationship to the world; God’s response to human sin; and the nature, characteristics, and values of the Kingdom of God. As a result, the student will gain an understanding of the biblical worldview, God’s redemptive activity as recorded in the Bible, qualities of the Christian life, and the meaning of a life lived in the Kingdom of God. The course aims to prepare the student to make choices and decisions in life that will be other-centered and life-transforming - decisions that are shaped by one’s commitment to practice and promote the biblical worldview.
