The Intervention Specialist Program at MVNU has been approved for IS: Mild/Moderate License by the Ohio Department of Education. Qualified faculty with a depth of experience in working with pupils with disabilities will guide and assist candidates through this program.

Course Descriptions

ISP6001
Individual Learning Differences Field Experiences (1)

A field experience in which students observe and support in an approved K-12 school environment where a diverse student population is represented. Candidates will have 30 clock hours at the elementary and 30 clock hours at the secondary levels. Corequisite: ISP6002 or ISP6012.

Inclusion and Exceptional Teaching: PK-12 (2)

A study of teaching exceptional learners in the general curriculum. Cultural as well as familial backgrounds are considered as factors in instructional planning. Prerequisite: Admission to the teacher Education Program, or special permission.

Developmental Characteristics and Individual Learning Differences: PK-12 (2)

An examination of developmental characteristics of human beings and the interaction of development and exceptionalities. Special emphasis is given to the learning needs of exceptional learners at each development. Prerequisite: Admission to the Teacher Education Program, or special permission.

Individualized Instructional Strategies Field Experience (1)

A field experience (60 clock hours) in which students adapt and use instructional strategies designed for exceptional learning needs curriculum and materials. Prerequisite: ISP6012. Corequisite: ISP6022 or ISP6023.

Individualized Instructional Strategies: Mathematics and Content Areas (2)

A study of selected research-based instructional strategies in mathematics and other content areas for exceptional learners. As teachers, they adapt and use instructional strategies designed for exceptional learning needs curriculum and materials. Prerequisite: ISP6012.

Individualized Instructional Strategies: Reading and Language (3)

A study of selected research-based instructional strategies in reading and language for exceptional learners. As teachers, they adapt and use instructional strategies designed for exceptional learning needs curriculum and materials. Prerequisite: ISP6012.

Extended Field Experience for Exceptional Learners (2)

A field experience (120 clock hours) in which students apply assessment and management knowledge to build skills in serving exceptional learners. Prerequisite: ISP6012. Corequisites: ISP6033 and ISP6042.

Diagnostic Assessment Strategies for Exceptional Learners (3)

A study of varied standardized, criterion-referenced, authentic and information assessment strategies to develop date upon which to write an individualized educational program (IEP) for exceptional learners. Candidates learn to develop and use effective authentic and criterion-referenced assessment tools for monitoring and reporting academic and behavioral progress.

Classroom Management and Monitoring Strategies for Exceptional Learners (2)

An examination of assessment knowledge and skills to necessary for long-term planning (including transitions planning), classroom and behavior management, and monitoring student progress and performance. Special emphasis is given to student motivation to achieve, development of appropriate social and classroom behaviors, and the use of appropriate technologies to support motivation and behavioral growth.

Advanced Behavior Assessment and Analysis (3)

A study of single subject design techniques to analyze and track student behavior. Written reports documenting various designs is required. Prerequisite: ISP6042.

Consultation and Collaboration Field Experience(1)

A field experience (60 clock hours) in which students apply skills and knowledge they have gain to work actively with parents, colleagues, administrations, or other constituencies to solve real school problems related to exceptional learners. Corequisites: ISP6043 and ISP6052.

ISP6052
Consultation and Collaboration for the Inclusion of Exceptional Learners (2)

An examination of knowledge and skills in working with colleges to ensure the inclusion of exceptional learners in diverse and regular learning environments. Special emphasis is given to intervention, team support, special education laws, and policies related to inclusion.

ISP6066
Advanced Practicum (6)

A full-time 10 week field experience in which the student teacher assumes the various teaching responsibilities in a classroom under the supervision of a licensed intervention specialist. Prerequisite: ISP6051.

ISP6073
Current Issues in Professional Education and Ethical Practice (3)

A survey of broad array of professional and ethical practice issues related to exceptional learners. Students complete a professional standards and ethical practice statement for their careers. Prerequisite: ISP6066.

ISP6093
Special Education Research and Writing (3)

A research project in which the student designs, implements, collects and analysis data, evaluates, and reports on an assessment or instructional project for exceptional learners. Research projects require advisor and a faculty committee approval. Corequisite: ISP6043.
