Pre-Medical Student Information

MVNU defines a Pre-Medical Student as someone whose goal is to become one of the following types of health professionals:

• Allopathic physician (M.D.)
• Osteopathic physician (D.O.)
• Dentist (D.D.S.)
• Optometrist (O.D.)
• Veterinarian (D.V.M.)
• Podiatrist (D.P.M.)
• Chiropractor (D.C.)

Other types of health care providers are discussed on the Allied Health Professions page. The seven professions listed above have been grouped together because they share many similarities.

• The student begins his/her preparation by taking science and humanities classes at the undergraduate level.
• The student usually earns a bachelors degree before beginning clinical training.
• The undergraduate degree may be in any discipline; however, many pre-medical students major in biology or chemistry.
• All pre-medical students complete a common core of science classes regardless of their academic major.
• Application for clinical training usually involves standardized admissions tests, application services, and recommendation letters.
• The student takes clinical training (usually four years) at a college of health professions, and earns a doctoral degree.
