MEDICAL TECHNOLOGY
Medical technologists perform laboratory analyses of blood,
urine and other specimens in order to help physicians diagnose
and treat diseases.
Mount Vernon Nazarene University offers an educational program that leads to a bachelors degree in medical technology. The first three years (92 semester hours) may be taken on the MVNU campus and include courses in biology, chemistry, mathematics, and humanities. The final year (12 months) must be taken at a medical technology school that has been approved by the American Medical Association. This training is transferred to MVNU as 32 semester hours. After all requirements have been satisfied, MVNU confers the degree Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology.
The following courses must be completed during the three pre-clinical
years:
Biology
- General Zoology with laboratory
- Microbiology with laboratory
- At least two additional courses chosen from Botany, Invertebrate
Zoology, Genetics, Comparative Vertebrate Anatomy and Developmental
Biology.
Chemistry
- General Chemistry I and II with laboratory
- Organic Chemistry I and II with laboratory
- Quantitative Chemistry and Biochemistry are recommended but
not required
Mathematics
- Intermediate Algebra or Precalculus Mathematics
- Introduction to Statistics is recommended
Liberal Arts
- MVNU's General Education core must be satisfied
- A total of 92 semester hours of college work is required
