The MVNU History & Political Science is committed to bringing its students and the campus, as well as Mount Vernon, community first-rate events to learn about and discuss issues relevant to our disciplines. We are pleased to partner with on-campus and off-campus clubs and organizations in many of these ventures. November 6: MVNU Election Night Party Join us for the first installment of a new tradition on campus: MVNU and Mount Vernon community members gathering together to witness history in the making on election night. All are welcome to gather together for a casual evening stocked with pizza, pop, and other refreshments. The idea is simple: Hang out and watch the big event unfold as you chat with friends and meet some new ones.
This event is co-sponsored by the MVNU History & Political Science Department.

October 30: Congressional Debate
-- Ohio's 7th U.S. Congressional District MVNU is proud to co-sponsor the
one and only debate for Ohio's 7th Congressional district, between Rep. Bob Gibbs (R-Incumbent) and Ms. Joyce Healy-Abrams (D-Challenger). The event will be held at Kenyon College's Rosse Hall and all are encouraged to attend. Moderators include Jack Torry of the Columbus Dispatch and Samantha Scoles of
Mount Vernon News.
This will be a major event in our community and one that no concerned citizen should miss. MVNU is honored to take part in presenting this prestigious event, along with community partners including Kenyon College and the Knox County Chamber of Commerce.

October 11: Faculty Panel on "Christians & The 2012 Election: What is Our Role?"
The MVNU History & Political Science Department joins with the MVNU School of Theology & Philosophy to bring you an in-depth panel discussion on the intersection of faith and politics in the 2012 election – and beyond. Should Christians be involved in politics? How? Why (or why not)? Faculty from across the disciplines will present their views on this important topic and then open the forum to dialogue with the audience.
Following the event, all are invited to stay and watch the first and only debate between 2012 vice presidential candidates Joe Biden and Paul Ryan.
When: Thursday, October 11, from 7:00-8:30 PM (panel) and 9:00-10:30 PM (VP debate)

October 3: MVNU College Democrats & College Republicans Debate
MVNU's College Democrats and College Republicans clubs debate the presidential election and the most important issues facing our country today. Come support political dialogue on our campus and bring your own questions for the audience participation time. Pizza and refreshments will be provided by the debate's sponsors, the MVNU College Democrats and College Republicans.
Following the event, all are invited to stay and watch the first debate between 2012 presidential candidates Barack Obama and Mitt Romney.
When: Wednesday, October 3, from 8:00-9:00 PM (MVNU debate) and 9:00-10:30 PM (presidential debate)

September 17: Constitution Day Speaker Dr. John C. Green Nationally-renowned religion and politics scholar Dr. John C. Green visited MVNU to give this year's Constitution Day presentation, "The Faith Factor: Religion & the 2012 Election." MVNU was honored to host Dr. Green, Distinguished Professor of Political Science at the University of Akron and Director of the Ray C. Bliss Institute on Applied Politics. Dr. Green is one of the foremost authorities on religion and politics, having published numerous books and articles on this and related topics. He is also a Senior Research Adviser for the Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life, and he regularly appears in national and local media stories on elections and other political matters.
Over 120 members of the MVNU and Mount Vernon community turned out to hear Dr. Green's presentation and participate in the Q&A session that followed. Our community also enjoyed Dr. Green's presentation on "Civility & Political Discourse" at the September 17 campus chapel gathering.
We thank Dr. Green for his excellent presentation and look forward to another great Constitution Day event next year.
